Torver – Witching Hour (2026) – Review by Robert Mallett

If any part of Great Britain is a natural homeland for UK Black Metal, then Cumbria, the former Roman frontier territory and later part of the Brittonic kingdom of Rheged, is it. Humans have lived in this rugged and profoundly beautiful area since the dawn of time, with evidence of the earliest known activity at Kirkhead Cave dating back to around 11,000 B.C.

It’s hardly surprising then that a good deal of Britain’s most potent Black Metal comes from this most mysterious and mythical of places. As a border people wedged between England and Scotland, the Combrogi witnessed centuries of Anglo-Scottish conflict. The land itself was forged by volcanoes 450 million years ago. Glaciers carved the valleys and great lakes that now cover the area. The home and inspiration for English poets like Coleridge and Wordsworth, this is a place of spiritual freedom and rugged wildness akin to the remotest parts of Scandinavia or Latin America. It remains untamed, and the people are strongly independent. A place of quiet mysticism characterised by an ancient folklore of spirits, giants and haunted fells. A place for fierce and uncompromising artists to create greatness. A place for Witchcraft

And indeed, greatness is alive and well in the world of Cumbrian Black Metal. Wulfhere Productions, based in Cumbria, is operated by Paul Gibson of Thy Dying Light and for years now the label has been putting out very high-quality releases at a prolific rate. Bands like Ancient North, Frost Witch and, most notably, Úlfarr have all created masterpieces in their own right, with powerful recordings whose rawness and black aura have driven UK Black Metal to ever greater heights.

Wulfhere’s latest full album release, Torver’s Witching Hour, if anything, raises the bar further, even if it has been a long while in the making. Originally formed as Sitri in 2013, Torver have released a steady stream of demos and split releases, perhaps most notably the ultra-raw, lo-fi Beyond the Shadows with Atra Mors in 2018. But Witching Hour is not simply a record of how far Torver have progressed since then. It is more the living embodiment of the Ritualistic, Witchcraft traditions of Cumbria that is breathtakingly original and profoundly powerful.

The combination of aggressive riffing with lone violin, string arrangements and spoken passages creates Black Metal with both symphonic and folk elements, producing a full, dare I say it, epic sound that evokes the Witching Hour itself. Yet this album is much more than a bog-standard unimaginative variant of these tired genres. Tracks like Nocturnal Serenade, Witching Hour, and Where Angels Fear to Tread and Walk Alone are delivered with a force and urgency that only music created in such a deeply enigmatic part of the British Isles can hope to deliver. And the cover completes the picture, with its shadowy figure holding a decapitated head, conveying the deep, dark, violent history of Cumbria that is far removed from the experience of the clueless tourists cluttering up its jaw-dropping scenery.

Witching Hour is another landmark UK Black Metal release that will become as much of a timeless masterpiece as Necroligion’s recent self-titled debut EP. For here, at the edge of empire, Rome found no peace, only the cold, the fells, and a people who would not kneel.
