Review by Felin Frost
FROM THE VASTLAND needs no introduction, a figure well known worldwide for his rich and icy discography will release on October 7th another noteworthy album, Taurvi.
Being very emphatic and restricted in words, I will say that the music delivered here continues its saga since the band’s beginnings, dating back to 2013 with the release of Kamarikan. A superb album, by the way. So basically, Taurvi honours the characteristic Norwegian black metal of the late 90s; melodic, malevolently raw, with blackened and beautiful riffs.
Conceptually FROM THE VASTLAND continues to explore passionate Persian history and mythology. Likewise, Sina (The Mastermind) is the composer, lyricist, vocalist and guitarist joined by Tjalve (Horizon Ablaze, Minattsvrede, Svartelder) on bass and Spektre (Ghaals Wyrd, Harm, Horizon Ablaze, Svartelder) on drums.
Taurvi is a good album without a doubt; each instrument has its place and is not overshadowed by either the guitars or the vocals, although we can’t undo them at any time because the level is high here. The whole atmosphere is due to the guitars’ melodicism, yet it keeps the place. The Persian musical nuances throughout the album are subtle but present and bring an extra shine to the work as a whole. In addition to the freezing cold, you will find the melody and depression, atmospheric moments, wild, feverish and stoked by the galloping drums.
The musical curve bends at the end of the track “Taurvi, the Archdemon” and lands into “Towards the Burning Horizon” my favourite track. What attracts me is precisely the dark singing and recited in the verses, the clean guitars giving a bright melancholy touch to this stunning finale that is Taurvi.
I highly recommend that you have this album in your collection. FROM THE VASTLAND never disappoints; it only gives pleasure.
