Vermilia – Everything

Review by Felin Frost

Rate: 8,5/10

Vermilia is a pagan black metal that makes us relive images and sensations from immemorial times lost amid time. From the release of their first album Kätkyt, through their EP Keskeneräisiä tarinoita and the latest release Ruska, this Finnish one-woman band has always been impeccable in the delivery of their songs.

It’s what we can all say, and we also agree, that when you live with body and soul to an ideal lifestyle, transmuting them into art becomes not only straightforward but also splendid and honest.

From the beginning, Vermilia’s music has been characterized by a mixture of rough and threatening Black Metal (so beloved) and Pagan Folk. So far, nothing new, but that’s not all; if not, the initial reception so far would not be so massive.
Ruska once again brings these elements that are her trademark but bets on post-black and a more penetrating dark folk with tons of tribal sounds.

Alkusointu (The Opening Chord), the opening track slowly transports us to a distant and magical world. It sets the tone for Marras, which sounds similar to Ulver at some point, yet exquisite, pure and soulful, and perfectly gives the essence of pagan metal. Then comes Hautavajo.

Here we have weight, aggression, and a lot of power, and the vocal variety is pleasant. The album does not disappoint and could not; the tracks are cohesive and satisfying to listen to. The use of piano and harmonious guitars bring sound tones of a calibre that only this girl could create. Transmuting between fierce and clean vocals and respectful riffs, without mercy, once again, Vermilia marks our hearts.

Affable and highly recommended!
